2gether: The series Review

Tine is a handsome freshman who started college with the hope of finding his one true love. But problems arise in the form of, a gay boy, Green who has a huge crush on him. To deter Greens’ pursuits, Tine asks, a popular student and the resident heartthrob, Sarawat to pretend to be his fake boyfriend. Between the personal guitar classes by Sarawat and proving that they are, in fact, in an actual relationship, the lines between what’s real and what’s fake starts to blur.

I have mixed feelings about 2gether: The series. It was my first BL and I was excited to give this one a try. For, a highly viewed and liked drama, my feelings were…

Don’t get me wrong ,the drama was okay and I have to say it’s a great starter if it’s your first time watching BLs because many of the plot lines won’t feel as cliché as it is but it’s not the best BL drama out there. The drama was cute, so awesome that you wonder how can a drama that started off really great ended this badly.

The lead couples’ chemistry was great at the beginning with a little bickering and revenge going on but when they officially started their relationship, the chemistry kind of went downhill. For a person who proudly proclaimed his feelings at the beginning, Sarawat became as stony as brick wall towards the end and sometimes felt like he was done with Tine. And sometimes his attitude and behavior gives big warning signs.

Tine is an adorable character and has insecurities but we see absolutely no character development which was frustrating. Maybe it was just me because I felt like they were less like a couple towards the end.

And further, I felt it was too short and faster paced compared to k-dramas and that they sped up the plot on many scenes that should have been stressed more. Although the beginning was really good, I didn’t like how the plot just went pointless after they officially started dating. Moreover, towards the end, a girl, Pham, came out of nowhere, purely as a plot device, just to create a climax to the story. I would have really loved it if there were more couple scenes and more scenes of Tine accepting his sexuality instead of the stupid camping trip and the climax.

The other problem I had was that throughout the drama I thought Sarawat was gay, but then he hugs a girl and Tine goes all sad and mad and breaks up and that doesn’t even make any sense.

There was a lot of stalking involved that I was appalled that it was so normalized. There was stalking by Green, Tine, and Man and the first was shown as bad, the rest were shown as romantic and I’m like, that not how it works, dude.

Maybe it was because I was used to Korean dramas for so long, because I just felt that their acting was mediocre (especially by Frank and Drake who plays Phukong, Sarawats' brother, and Mil) and some of the comedic moments felt either horrifying or not funny (like in the case of Tine spiking Greens’ drink or Green stalking Tine).

Another thing that I didn’t understand was Man, Sarawats’ best friend, who is known for his playboy ways, suddenly develop feelings for Tines’ brother, Type, although it’s not mentioned anywhere that he’s anything but straight. Similarly Type is depicted to be against Tines’ relationship and suddenly he’s reciprocating Mans’ feelings. There was also the whole Man continuously being annoying and stalking Type when he clearly said he’s not interested and that's just one of the problem, of the many, had with this couple. Moreover, it felt a bit sudden because both of these people are assumed to be hetero and I feel like they should be given time to come to terms with their feelings or at least mentioned otherwise if they weren’t hetero.

Overall, the drama was okay, the couple had great moments and cute scenes that we only see in romantic comedies and their relationship was sometimes so sweet but it's not the best BL drama out there.
