Go Go Squid! Review

Go Go squid!, e-sports

Go Go Squid talks about a smart, bubbly online singer Squid, also known as Tong Nian, who has never been in love until she meets cold hearted Han Shagyan, the owner of an esports club "KK" and former CTF champion and a legend, at her cousin's internet café and decides to pursue him.

Okay, there are many things that I love and hate about this drama. I generally have really bad relationships with Chinese dramas, this is the second one I’m watching. The first one was ‘Boss and me’ and I didn’t even finish it. This one was slightly better because I actually finished it and that kind of hints at how this review is going to go.

First of all I loved how it portrayed esports and CTF championship with accuracy. How it’s not usually accepted as a sport that is equally important has other sports and the how society frown at the idea of people playing games for a living. This drama also had really cute couple moments and I like how they all got a happy ending, I am a sucker for happy endings. Han Shayna’s team is super awesome, I like all the member of ‘KK’ and all of them are super cute.

I mean look at these cuties

The problem I had with enjoying this drama wholeheartedly? That’s a huge ass list.

First of all, the girl was creepy and stalker-ish. She got his number by tricking him and then proceeded to send him messages as a store owner, which is okay, until she went to his game without a ticket and started telling other people that she knows him when she doesn’t even know his name. It was funny but if you think about it, that is kind of creepy crazy fan stalker behavior.

Second, it's the whole plot of why Han Shagyan, back when he played, had a fallout with his leader and decided to start his own training company. *spoiler* It’s because the leader, Solo, got his ex-girlfriend pregnant and his current girlfriend, Ai Qing, decided to quit the team because of this. Which I don’t understand. I do understand that she can’t handle her boyfriend having a baby with another women although this was before he met her and he didn’t knew his ex was pregnant. But I don’t get why Han Shagyan got so worked up about it. He even went and told Solo to lie and say that it was Han Shagyan’s baby and not Solo’s which is stupid? And got angry when Solo didn’t do it. This is also why I admire Solo because he, not only at a young age has responsibilities of a leader but also, has to take the team to championship which they were so close to and taking care of a baby is definitely going to ruin it and he still decided to do it, and it’s a disabled baby! Han Shagyan, why are you such a jerk! He is a very good lover but he is a shitty person. I don’t even get why Tong Nian loves a guy who keeps a grudge against Solo for choosing keep his disabled baby, and not to lie to his girlfriend. I get that meant they wouldn’t get to be champions but they were unlucky, it’s not exactly Solo’s fault. Like really, is this how you're behaving? *spoiler ends*

There was also this reverse sexism going on which was prickling my feministic feelings and these scenes on how the guy should do all the household work like cooking and everything and the girl should just stand around looking pretty? Like? Household chores should be done by both of them, it’s not a one person job.

Then, I didn’t like the whole marriage decision that they both had, like one minute they didn’t want to and next they are getting married because both of them thinks the other wants to? Like Tong Nian wants to study but then suddenly she is going all 180 and now she wants to get married instead? Pick a decision and stick with it, girl!

Then, there was a suicide joke from Han Shayna’s step-mom about how he might suicide if she breaks up with him and I find that really horrifying and not romantic at all.

To top it all, some dialogues were dubbed and they were so obvious that it kind of ruined it more for me.

But overall the drama was good, I guess?  The couple had great chemistry, the second lead couple were cute too, Solo and his daughter were amazing and I was just watching it for the games, the members’ cuteness, and the cute funny couple moments. I wasn’t that disappointed because I had very little expectations when I started it.

Favorite scene: When Tong Nian got drunk at his place and told her mother she was dating him (which was a secret) and that she is sleeping at his place. That was hilarious 😂
