Tharntype: The series Review

Tharntype, mewgulf, bl, thai drama, review

Type, a homophobic student, realizes his roommate Tharn is gay and comes up with ways to make him change his room and eventually falls in love with him.

Trigger warning: Rape

Category: Romance, BL

Rate: 2/5

Okay, I have to admit, Tharntype is my guilty pleasure. I love it but as you can see I gave it really low ratings. Why? Because it has problems, a LOT of problems.

The only reason why I love it, is because of the leads chemistry. Mew and Gulf are really comfortable in their role as Tharn and Type. There is no awkwardness between them, their chemistry is amazing both on and off screen. I had a love at first sight when I saw Mew on screen and I was in love till the end of the drama, although his character gets a bit dumb later on. Althought this is Gulfs' first drama, his acting is good but, obviously, not good as Mews'

Since this is a prequel to ‘Love by Chance the series’ (see my review here), its not necessary to watch this but watching this would help us get the story of Tum and Tar, and Types involvement in that series.

This drama has a clean cut ending, many funny moments, I absolutely love Techno and is more mad about what they did to his character in ‘Love by chance’ (see my review here). We get a cameo appearance of Saint as Pete and Mean as Tin towards the epilogue which made me fangirl really hard. Honestly speaking, the epilogue and the special episode is the best part of this drama.

Some of the scenes in the drama are really steamy and it’s impossible to imagine them as not a couple in real life. I loved their acting and couple moments, I repeat, they were really good, so I will probably watch ‘Tharntype season 2’, squeal and fangirl over their chemistry and give bad ratings because of the plot. (The poster looks like they are getting married! *cue muffled squeals*)

The things I hate? Now that a list that goes on and on.

I hate how the plot showed strong themes and it was wrapped up into nothing but a plot device or as an afterthought. The drama involve Type having a childhood trauma and eventually overcoming it and getting over his prejudice against Homosexuals but that part of the plot wasn’t given importance or justice. I don’t know if the novel gave it justice, I haven’t read it but the drama definitely didn’t. Often his trauma is just used as plot device to move the plot forward.

I also really hated the whole kissing while sleeping, which is romanticized in 90’s K-dramas and seriously guys? Move on! No one thinks that’s romantic anymore. Then there was this bathroom blowjob scene that really made me feel uncomfortable, maybe it’s because Type was shown really reluctantly enjoying it and if that scene had come after they were in a relationship it would have been okay, and don’t get me wrong, I really liked their intimate scenes in later episodes but this scene just came out of nowhere and I didn’t like it at all.

I also hated how Tharn and Type, a really lovely couple, is so toxic. Tharn has really bad abandonment issues and I’m guessing that’s why Tharn is letting Type get away with many of his jerk-ish behavior. Type was that really abusive boyfriend who punches Tharn when he sees someone else forcing a kiss on him and Tharn is not exactly that innocent either. Sometimes I see the stupidity he gets into and I’m like, No wonder you’re getting punched boy!

There was also the whole problem of how rape is not considered as a serious crime in the drama, which isn’t shocking because the author of the novel is known for romanticizing rape is her novel. I really hate her and she really makes me speechless in her another work that is the drama ‘Love by chance’.

*Spoiler* The antagonist in the drama, caused the gang rape of a minor boy and later blackmailed him to do things and he wasn’t punished and was allowed to escape abroad. And none of the people who knew this, including Type and Tharn, bothered to report it. I’m aghast, horrified and furious every time I think about this. I also really hate how Tharns’ brother actually forgave Leong, like why? And what right do you even have?  *Spoiler ends*

I’m, fingers crossed, hoping that they will fix all these issues in Tharntype season 2 but, truthfully, I’m not that hopeful. Like I said, only here for the cute and steamy couple moments and for Techno.

Favorite OST: Kaownah - Be mine

Favorite Scene: Honestly speaking, I absolutely loved the special episode 13 but if I had to pick a moment, I would say the scene where Tharn ties Types hair while he is calling his dad. That scene is so adorable, intimate and presented so naturally that I loved it! They could have made it into a big deal or a moment like in ‘Descendants of the sun’ or ‘W: The two worlds’ but they didn’t and that made me love the scene more.
